The Lowdown with Gyles Brandreth
Posted 26th October 2021
We caught up with Gyles Brandreth, ahead of his show with Joanna Lumley at Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
Gyles and Joanna’s friendship goes way back.
Gyles Brandreth: We first met on 23 November 1969 – yes, this will be our 52nd anniversary! At our show, we’ll tell you the story of how that happened – and I think it’s a friendship based on laughter. So I’m hoping we have lots of funny moments we can share.
And what better place to share it than at Theatre Royal Drury Lane?
GB: There isn’t a theatre with greater historical connections than Theatre Royal Drury Lane. It couldn’t be more exciting to be on stage here talking about The Queen in a theatre that goes back to the reign of her ancestor, King Charles.
This love of the Royals started from an early age.
GB: It was the Coronation in 1953. I think it’s probably my first memory – being in the crowds on my father’s shoulders in the rain cheering and waving a little flag.
His show with Joanna Lumley will be talking all things Royal as well as sharing stories from each of their unlikely careers. What can we expect from A Right Royal Evening?
GB: Lots about The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, plus stories from both our lives you may not have heard before. Tales of our encounters with members of the Royal Family. Expect gossip and laughter – and perhaps the odd tear, too.
And not to mention it’s a welcome return to live entertainment.
GB: I’m excited and nervous. I was due to open in a show with Judi Dench in the week that lockdown began back in March 2020. That had to be postponed – as did my Break A Leg one man show tour. It will be extraordinary to be back with a live audience – and what a theatre for our return! We will do our best to make it a night to remember for everyone.
A Right Royal Evening with Joanna Lumley and Gyles Brandreth comes to Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Tuesday 23 November 2021. For more info and tickets, click here.
