The Lowdown with Lady Blackbird

Posted 8th January 2025

We spoke to the soul-jazz singer-songwriter ahead of her shows later this month.

Lady Blackbird’s career has seen her navigate her sound from a very early age. And through that journey, she’s learnt when to trust her gut.

Lady Blackbird: I’ve got a great producer (Chris Seefried, who she’s worked with on previous record, Black Acid Soul) who listens to me and also knows how to guide me without taking away. We listen to each other and work together. It’s a team effort.

And if she had to give one piece of advice to those starting in the music industry and finding their feet, what would it be?

LB: Pay attention and learn as much of the business as you can. The industry is full of money-hungry sharks who don’t care whether you are here one day and gone the next because they’ll be on to the next. Be aware.

Now an industry veteran, she’s been described as the “Grace Jones of Jazz” by Giles Peterson. How does a comparison like that frame her mindset?

LB: That was the biggest compliment of my life. I admire Grace Jones so much. I could only hope to one day live up to that.

2024 saw Lady Blackbird supporting Moby on his UK and European tour. How does performing to an arena differ to a more ‘intimate’ setting like The London Palladium?

LB: My show is precisely what it is. The excitement of being able to perform for people and getting that prepared never changes, even if the number of people varies.

So what can we expect from a Lady Blackbird show?

LB: You can expect an elevated version of the album. The energy that comes with me being able to look into the eyes of the people and feel their energy is electrifying.

Lady Blackbird comes to The London Palladium on Wed 29 and Thu 30 January 2025. For more info and to book tickets, click here.
