SAM MENDES’ LANDMARK PRODUCTION OF THE LEHMAN TRILOGY RETURNS TO LONDON

This landmark production will grace the stage of the Gillian Lynne Theatre from 24 September 2024 until 5 January 2025, for a strictly limited run.

A Modern Classic Returns

Described by the New York Times as a “genuinely epic production,” The Lehman Trilogy, written by Stefano Massini, adapted by Ben Power, and directed by the multi-award-winning Sam Mendes, has captivated audiences worldwide. With set design by the renowned Es Devlin, this mesmerizing chronicle of an American dynasty is set to once again enchant London audiences.

Tickets for this theatrical masterpiece go on sale this Wednesday, 19 June at 10am, starting from just £20.

A Story for the Ages

The Lehman Trilogy tells the sweeping story of the Lehman family, spanning generations and charting the rise and fall of the company that changed the world. The Guardian praises the production’s theatricality as “utterly astonishing,” making it a must-see for any theatre lover.

A Stellar Cast

Returning to their roles, John Heffernan, Aaron Krohn, and Howard W. Overshown will deliver their “virtuosic performances” (The Mercury News) as the Lehman brothers, their sons, and grandsons. Joining them are Cat Beveridge and Anyssa Neumann as principal and alternate pianists, respectively. Further casting announcements will follow.

Rufus Norris on The Lehman Trilogy

Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre, shared his excitement:

The Lehman Trilogy is storytelling at its best. Its success lies in its simplicity – three actors, one pianist, and one set combining to tell an epic family drama in the most intimate way. This extraordinary production has now been seen by over half a million people worldwide and it continues to resonate with audiences whether that be in London, New York, Sydney, or San Francisco. We are delighted to be bringing it back to the West End after its previous sold-out runs.”

Sam Mendes Reflects on the Journey

Sam Mendes, director and co-founder of Neal Street Productions, reflected on the journey of bringing The Lehman Trilogy to life:

“I heard about Stefano Massini’s The Lehman Trilogy in 2015. A year later, together with Ben Power and Es Devlin, a company of twelve actors at the National Theatre Studio read aloud a literal translation of what was in fact an epic poem. After a year of shaping it into a form we felt might chime for English-speaking audiences who had lived through the aftermath of the 2008 financial meltdown, it had morphed into a three-hander which premiered at the National Theatre in 2018. Now, seven years later, the production has been enjoyed on three continents, and on Broadway and is returning to the West End for the third time. This feels like a tribute to everyone who believed in it and collaborated in its making.”

Behind the Scenes

Mendes’ visionary direction is complemented by an outstanding creative team, including Es Devlin (set design), Katrina Lindsay (costume design), Luke Halls (video design), Jon Clark (lighting design), Nick Powell (composer and sound design), and many more. Their collaborative efforts have made The Lehman Trilogy an unforgettable theatrical experience.

A Global Sensation

Since its world premiere at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan in 2015, The Lehman Trilogy has been a global phenomenon. Following its acclaimed sold-out runs in London, New York, Sydney, and San Francisco, this production continues to leave an indelible mark on audiences worldwide.
