Showstopper! The Improvised Musical has made a welcome return to the West End, at its new home of the Cambridge Theatre.
For those that haven’t yet experienced the live phenomenon, the show is a fully-realised musical created live on the spot from audience suggestions. The cast take suggestions from the audience for the setting and musical styles and turn them into ingenious storylines, hilarious characters and stunning song and dance numbers. The audience also name that night’s show, which is added to The Showstoppers’ archive of more than 1200 shows that they have performed since the show’s inception in 2008.
So, whether it’s a Broadway barnstormer or sophisticated Sondheim, whether it’s set in an American high school, ancient Egypt or a coffee shop – if the audience suggests it, The Showstoppers will perform it!
The show has been a ‘must-see’ show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the past 13 years (about to be 14 as it returns to the Pleasance Grand this August). It had a West-End run in 2015 at The Apollo in Shaftesbury Avenue, for which it won its Olivier. In 2019 it also had a run at The Other Palace.
Artistic Directors, Adam Meggido and Dylam Emery said, “After a wonderful seven years at the Lyric, we are delighted to begin a new residency at the Cambridge Theatre. We can’t wait to make up dozens more brand-new spontaneous musicals right in the heart of the West End among all the shows that we know and love. Thanks for having us, LW Theatres!”
Showstopper! The Improvised Musical comes to the Cambridge Theatre for selected dates between May and December.
